The story Weathering the Storm in Ersama by Harsh Mander is based on the true narrative of the terrible cyclone that slammed Orissa, or the region now known as Odisha, on October 27, 1999. The heroic exploits of a young man named Prashant, who spent two nights stuck on the roof of his friend’s home following the frightening storm, are highlighted in the story. Prashant went to Ersama, a tiny town in coastal Orissa, about 18 kilometres away from his home village, to meet a friend.

The cyclone’s impact was so severe that several individuals were killed and numerous villages’ homes were completely destroyed. Prashant showed extraordinary fortitude and courage in the face of the natural disaster in such tough circumstances. Along with saving his own life, he successfully managed the village’s reaction to the dangerous storm. During the terrifying storm, there was continuous, intense rain that swept many homes and people away. Floodwaters covered everything, and bodies were floating in them. Prashant spent two nights with his friend’s family while stranded on the rooftop of his friend’s house away from home. The constant rain made it extremely cold. He could see the damage in the morning.caused by the super cyclone.

There was water everywhere, and only a couple of the concrete houses were still. Dead animals and floating human corpses could be seen in all directions. Prashant was distressed about his family and felt helpless. Prashant made the decision to travel to his hometown of Kalikuda and check on his family and relatives after the rain stopped falling after two days and the rain waters began to drain. He couldn’t find any of his family at first, but he soon discovered his uncle’s buddies. He then went to the Red Cross shelter to look for them and later discovered his family.

Prashant was upset to see the terrible conditions of the super typhoon victims who took protection wherever they could. They had only a few green coconuts from the tree that the hurricane had uprooted, and they were hungry. As a result, he made the decision to volunteer and assist the survivors by organising food for them with the support of some seniors and other young people like himself. In order to clear the trash and floating corpses and to treat the wounds and fractures of the injured, he first organised a group of young volunteers.

Several food packs were dropped by a military chopper on the sixth day after the natural disaster. It didn’t progress any more than that, though. Prashant and his colleagues volunteers made the decision to place kids on the ground with empty plates on their stomachs in order to attract the helicopter’s focus. The strategy was successful, and the aircraft then began distributing food and supplies from the top.

Prashant persisted in his hard work and built an orphans’ shelter out of polythene sheets. The orphans were placed in new foster homes with childless widows. He also organized sporting events for kids and urged women to work in a food-for-work programme run by an NGO. As a result, Prashant helped many people who had been negatively impacted by the mega cyclone. He was loved by everyone who was grateful for his assistance. In fact, his devoted dedication to humanity was admirable.
