Short Summary- “The Lost Child”

The Lost Child is a noteworthy story written by Mulk Raj Anand. In this short story, a toddler visits a spring fair together with his parents. The place was crowded with people and there have been different forms of stalls set up in the fair. The kid was overjoyed when he saw the toys within the shops and pleaded to his parents to shop for him a toy. But his father gave him a serious look upon hearing his request. Meanwhile, his mother asked him to see the mustard field which appeared like a field of gold. A bunch of dragon-flies were fluttering their colorful wings over the mustard flowers. The kid tried catching one in every of those colorful insects, but as his mother called him to the walkway and he ran towards his parents gaily. He discover the cooing of doves & picked up some petals in the grove. But one more time as his parents called him, he made his way towards them while he was running around the banian tree.

When the kid reached the fair along with his parents, he saw a sweet seller calling out ‘rasagulla, gulab-jaman, jalebi, burfi’. His mouth watered seeing the tasty sweets & he asked his father to shop for him a sweet. But nobody paid heed to his request. As he went ahead together with his parents, he listened a flower-seller selling “A garland of gulmohur”. He saw the basket of flowers & wanted to shop a garland. However, he knew his parents wouldn’t buy him the flowers, so he walked on with them. Then, he observed a balloon-man selling rainbow color balloons. He wanted to shop those balloons but he knew that his parents would refuse, considering he was comparatively older to play with those colorful balloons. Hence, he walked past the balloon-man together with his parents.

As he moved forward, the kid saw a snake-charmer who was playing a flute to a snake coiled in a basket. He went near to the snake-charmer, but he knew his parents wouldn’t accept of his listening to such coarse music. So, he moved further and saw a merry-go-round. He observed that several people were enjoying the ride & called out to his parents that he wanted to take a ride. But there was no yes & no from them. When he spinned, he couldn’t find his parents near to him. The kid desperately looked out for his parents, but they were nowhere around him. He understood that he was lost so he started crying.

The kid gave out a loud deep cry & tears started rolling down his eyes as he looked for his parents everywhere. He cried loudly & ran everywhere in search but he couldn’t find his parents anywhere. The place was very jam and he ran to the shrine if he could find them there. Unfortunately, he was lost & as he was tiny, he went ahead crossing many folks who were huge in size there.

Suddenly, a man listen to his cry & lifted him up in his arms. The kid was lucky that he was picked up by an affectionate man. The kind man inquire him about his parents, but the kid replied sobbingly not knowing their whereabouts. The person tried to pacify the & asked him if he would like to take a ride on the merry-go-round. But the kid replied that he needed his parents only. Soon, the man took the kid to the sweet shop, balloon-man & flower-seller and asked if he would like to buy any of those, but the teenage boy refused. He was adamant that he does not need anything except his parents. The kid turned his face aloof from all those things which he wanted to shop earlier. Thus, the kid only shouted, ‘I want my father, I want my mother!’
