Short Summary – Amanda

This poem portrays the mindset of a young child whose mother regularly lectures her on what to do and what not to do. Amanda with her mother, who is irritated by her mistakes. Her mother used to tell her to sit up straight and to avoid bending down her shoulders. She is reminded by her mother to complete her schoolwork. Little Amanda frequently daydreams about living in freedom in the open.

She sits slowly, according to her mother, who also thinks this. Amanda does this by using her imagination to avoid her parents’ daily instructions. She says I’m the last resident of a tranquil, emerald sea. In her own imagined universe, where there are no borders, she finds peace. Amanda sees herself as a free-spirited mermaid sailing over the calm waves of the green sea. In the middle of this, Amanda’s mother’s inquiry about whether she cleans her room and shoes further forces her out of her sleep.

In a different dream, Amanda imagines herself as an abandoned child wandering aimlessly in everlasting freedom and golden calm. She says she would have appreciated her independence then by leaving footprints in the sand with her bare feet. She would lead a calm life. Her daydream is interrupted by her mother’s constant concerns. Amanda’s mother stopped her from eating chocolate due to her pimples and acne. Additionally, she confronts her for not looking at her when she is speaking to her.

Amanda is having yet another dream in which she imagines herself as the fairy tale character Rapunzel and wishes to live calmly in a massive tower like her.

She has a dream in which she never lets her hair fall from the tower like Rapunzel did. She will lead a solitary and calm life in the tower. She won’t ever let anyone enter the tower. She is finally prohibited from being moody by her mother. She doesn’t want anyone to make her feel bad for bothering her kid. The poet has not yet included a response from Amanda’s perspective in his writing. She has been so frustrated by this continuous nagging that she has even given up fantasizing of herself as someone else. She only ever attempts this to get away from her parents’ constant taunting and domination.

The impression that Amanda’s parents have is that she is irritated but not responding. Her activities have damaged her parents’ image, and they are worried about it. They worry about how society will view them if their child exhibits constant grumpiness.
