IPS Full Form


IPS stands for Indian Police Service ( IPS Full Form ) and is one of the prestigious civil services in India. IPS is considered as one of the three All India Services of the Government Of India along with Indian Administration Services and Indian Foreign Services. The list of civil list of IPS officers is updated and maintained by Ministry Of Home Affairs. 

In 1948 a year after India Got Independence from the United Kingdom Indian Police Services replaced Indian Imperial Police and since then it came into existence.

IPS Exam Eligibility Criteria

The fundamental and primary step in the whole process of becoming an IPS officer is to clear the Civil Service exam and for that, you need to meet the certain eligibility criteria set up the Union Public Service Commission in order to appear for the civil services exam.


A candidate needs to fulfil either of the following nationality criteria:-

  • Citizen Of India.
  • Subject Of Nepal.
  • Subject Of Bhutan.
  • A Tibetan Refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, for permanent settlement in India.

Age Limit

A candidate needs to fulfil the following age requirements.

  • Minimum age should be 21 years.
  • Maximum age should be 32 years as on 1st of August.

Age Relaxation For The Following Candidates:-

  • No relaxation in case of general category.
  • Up to a maximum of 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
  • Up to a maximum of 3 years for OBC candidates.
  • Up to a maximum of 5 years for a candidate belonging to Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Up to a maximum of 3 years for Defence Service Personnel. 
  • Up to a maximum of 10 years for visually challenged or physically disabled candidates. 

Educational Qualification Criteria

A student needs to meet the following educational qualification criteria in order to appear for the exams.

  • A bachelors degree from a recognised university. 
  • Candidates who have written or will write the exams of final year examination are also eligible to apply for Civil Services examination.
  • Candidates with professional/technical qualification which are recognised by Government as equivalent to professional or technical degrees are also eligible to apply.
  • MBBS candidates who have not completed their internship yet will be given the provisional admission to take the exams.
